Glyph Comics Awards
History
The Glyph Comics Awards recognizes the best in comics made by, for, and about people of color from the preceding calendar year. While it is not exclusive to Black creators, it does strive to honor those who have made the greatest contributions to the comics medium in terms of both critical and commercial impact. By doing so, the goal is to encourage more diverse and high quality work across the board and to inspire new creators to add their voices to the field. The awards are named for the blog Glyphs: The Language of the Black Comics Community at Pop Culture Shock, started in 2005 by comics journalist Rich Watson as a means to provide news and commentary of comics with black themes, as well as tangential topics in the fields of black science-fiction/fantasy and animation.
Award Categories
The Glyph Comics Awards celebrates the best in Black-themed comics and honoring those who have made the greatest contributions in terms of critical and commercial impact in the following categories:
Outstanding storytelling that combines plot, characters, and art into a compelling narrative.
A cover that delivers immediate impact and draws readers into the story.
Exceptional writing that demonstrates strong storytelling craft and narrative voice.
Artistry that elevates the story through visual depth, creativity, and innovation.
Honoring an emerging creator or team whose work shows exceptional promise and potential.
A memorable male character with depth, complexity, and strong reader appeal.
A compelling female character with depth, presence, and lasting impact.
A comic strip or web-comic with engaging storytelling, distinctive art, and memorable characters.
Nominees are selected by the Glyph Comics Awards Committee from the year’s judged submissions, spotlighting works with broad appeal and strong reader connection.
Fans vote online to choose the work that resonated with them most.
